WGBH (Channel 2) has a great website which helps families understand the high school selection process - it's here. This site explains how to apply, when to apply, and so forth. If you do not select a school for your student, they will be assigned one.

Boston used to have one fairly large (1,000 kids or so) high school in each neighborhood. Now many of those buildings remain, but they have been divided up into different "small schools" -- where each floor in the building is actually its own school. To find out more about these schools click Boston High School Renewal.

For example, what used to be South Boston High School is now three schools in the same building -- called Monument, Odyssey, and Excel. Similarly, the schools which used to be called Hyde Park High, West Roxbury High, and Dorchester High are now all divided into smaller academies.

Brighton, Burke, Charlestown, East Boston, and English remain as the five large schools.

Madison Park is the city's only vocational high school.

Remember that there are 10 pilot public high schools and 3 charter public high schools too. They are not listed in this section, but instead listed under the "Pilot Public Schools" and "charter public schools" tabs.
